MP Njoroge Kuriria.
Gatundu North MP Elijah Njoroge Kururia has sparked controversy after launching a scathing attack on Ol Kalou voters following the defeat of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina in Thursday’s by-election.
In remarks shared online shortly after the results were announced, Kururia openly criticised the electorate, using harsh language to express his frustration with the outcome.
The MP accused voters of making what he termed a poor political decision, questioning their rejection of the ruling party’s candidate despite heavy government-backed campaigning.
“Watu wa Ol Kalou ni wajinga, waongo na wakorofi sana. Rudisheni Gas za UDA!” Kururia said, in comments that have since drawn widespread reaction across political circles.
The legislator went further to ridicule Muchina’s performance, suggesting the scale of defeat reflected a lack of public confidence.
His remarks, which included personal insults directed at the candidate, have intensified debate over political conduct and respect for voters.
The Ol Kalou by-election had attracted national attention, with the UDA party deploying senior government officials and rolling out a series of development projects in the constituency ahead of the vote.
These included road upgrades, electricity connectivity expansion, and the launch of key public infrastructure projects, widely seen as part of efforts to sway voter support.
UDA leaders had framed the contest as critical for aligning the constituency with the national government to accelerate development.
However, voters ultimately elected a rival candidate, dealing a significant political setback to the ruling party in what was viewed as a high-stakes mini-poll.
Kururia’s remarks have triggered mixed reactions, with critics condemning the language as disrespectful and undemocratic.
Some political observers argue that such statements risk alienating voters and undermining confidence in elected leaders.
The by-election outcome is expected to shape political strategy in the Mt Kenya region, where shifting voter sentiment continues to influence the ruling party’s support base.
