Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has called for unity and inclusive leadership following the decisive outcome of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, where DCP candidate Sammy Kamau Waweru secured a landslide victory.

In a measured statement issued shortly after provisional results indicated Waweru’s win, Kindiki congratulated the incoming MP and urged him to prioritise cohesion among constituents.

He emphasised the need for leadership that transcends political divisions in a constituency that has just undergone a highly contested electoral process.

“Congratulations Sammy Douglas Waweru Kamau on your imminent victory in the by-election held today for the MP seat for Ol Kalou constituency,” Kindiki said. “Unite the residents and serve them all without distinction.”

The Deputy President also took time to commend UDA candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, despite his loss in the race.

Muchina garnered 5,304 votes, significantly trailing Waweru who polled 33,937 votes, representing more than 80 percent of the total ballots cast.

Kindiki described Muchina’s campaign as disciplined and issue-driven, noting that it stood out in an increasingly heated political environment.

“Congratulations Samuel Muchina, our UDA Party candidate, for a good show and a mature, issue-based campaign devoid of insults,” he added. “You may not have succeeded today, but your star shines bright into the future.”

The by-election, triggered by the death of former MP David Kiaraho earlier this year, attracted national attention and was widely viewed as a political litmus test in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Waweru’s overwhelming victory signals a significant shift in local political dynamics, dealing a setback to the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), which had heavily campaigned to retain the seat.

Kindiki’s remarks reflect a conciliatory tone from the government, even as political analysts interpret the results as a potential indicator of changing voter sentiment in Central Kenya.
