Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has raised alarm over an alleged attack on a Democratic Congress Party (DCP) campaign truck in Ol Kalou, accusing security agencies of failing to protect political activities ahead of the constituency’s by-election.

Gachagua claimed the incident occurred at a time when senior security officials were assuring residents of enhanced security during the campaign period, alleging that individuals linked to a government security unit were responsible for the chaos.

“As the DIG is making a litany of promises for high-level security in Ol Kalou, his Nairobi Sierra Killer Squad is wrecking havoc in Ol Kalou,” Gachagua stated.

He further alleged that the DCP campaign vehicle was attacked using guns and teargas, describing the incident as a threat to democratic participation.

“They have this afternoon attacked DCP sound truck with guns and teargas. Goon Nation. New Haiti!” he added.

The claims came after Rose Gakuo, the chief protocol officer of Gachagua, gave a detailed account of the events leading to the attack.

According to Gakuo, the DCP campaign team had been conducting civic education at Kaptein when two Toyota Prados and a Subaru approached from the Ndemi direction.

She alleged that armed individuals emerged from the vehicles and fired teargas canisters at the campaign truck, forcing the driver to flee towards Gilgil while being pursued by the three vehicles.

“The truck driver fled towards Gilgil under hot pursuit from the three vehicles,” Gakuo said.

She claimed that one of the Prados later lost control and rolled over in an area between Karunga and Chokereria, while the DCP truck became stuck at Pembroke Bridge.

Gakuo further alleged that members of the entertainment crew aboard the truck, including MCs, a DJ and dancers, were forced to escape on foot amid heavy gunfire.

“The thugs set the truck on fire. The truck driver was taken by the thugs,” she claimed.

The allegations have intensified political tensions surrounding the Ol Kalou by-election, with the DCP accusing unnamed individuals of attempting to intimidate its campaign teams.

Gachagua warned that such incidents could undermine public confidence in the electoral process, arguing that political competition should be conducted in an environment where all parties can freely engage voters.
