Siaya Governor James Orengo has strongly condemned incidents of violence and intimidation linked to the Ol Kalou by-election, terming them a threat to Kenya’s democratic process.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Orengo accused unnamed actors of attempting to manipulate the outcome of the vote through coercive tactics.

He argued that elections must remain transparent and peaceful to reflect the will of the people.

“The violence in Ol Kalou is a direct and unacceptable attempt to manipulate and rig democratic processes. Elections are the cornerstone of our republic, and they must always be conducted in an open, peaceful, and fully transparent manner,” Orengo stated.

The by-election in Nyandarua County attracted national attention, with reports of heightened tension in the days leading up to the vote.

Clashes between rival supporters left several people injured, while journalists covering the campaigns reported harassment and attacks.

Orengo also raised concern over alleged interference with media operations during the electoral process. He described the reported confiscation of equipment as a violation of constitutional freedoms.

“The targeted confiscation of media equipment is a grave constitutional violation. Free press is not a privilege, it is a fundamental right and indispensable to the conduct of free, fair, and credible elections,” he added.

While security agencies maintained that voting day remained largely calm under heavy police deployment, opposition figures and rights groups have pointed to an atmosphere of intimidation that could have influenced voter turnout and participation.

The Siaya governor further called on President William Ruto’s administration to uphold constitutional principles and avoid actions that could undermine public trust in elections.

“President Ruto and his administration must respect the Constitution and immediately cease any actions that interfere with the sovereign power and democratic authority of the Kenyan people,” Orengo said.
