In a dramatic twist of fate, Kajiado politician GK Kechwo narrowly escaped the helicopter crash that claimed the life of Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno and five others in Chepkiep, Mosop, Nandi County, on Saturday, 28 February 2026.
The aircraft, an Airbus H125 registered 5Y-DSB, crashed and burst into flames shortly after takeoff, leaving six dead.
In an emotional Facebook post, GK Kechwo recounted the moments that changed his life. He had planned to board the same helicopter alongside Hon. Ng’eno.
“I took a boda boda to Mara Rianta. It got a puncture, slowing my journey. And that is how I missed the deadly flight by five minutes,” Kechwo shared. The boda boda rider, sensing his distress, offered simple yet haunting words: “Maybe there is a reason.”
Those words, Kechwo said, still echo in his mind.
“The saddest day of my life,” he wrote, as he reflected on the loss of a close friend and political ally. He described knowing Hon. Ng’eno for 19 years, tracing their relationship back to 2007, when the MP visited him during his Form 3 school days.
The missed flight has left Kechwo grappling with both grief and survivor’s guilt.
“I have known Johana since we were young. He had come to see me back then, never imagining the paths our lives would take. Today, I cannot comprehend losing him like this,” he added.
Authorities confirmed the helicopter was carrying six people when it crashed near a farm in Chepkiep Village.
Emergency teams rushed to the scene, recovering wreckage and bodies. While investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, the tragedy has shaken political circles in Kajiado and Nandi Counties, with leaders and constituents mourning the unexpected loss.
