A simmering dispute within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has escalated, with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna preparing to defend himself against disciplinary action by the party.

Sifuna, who also serves as ODM’s Secretary-General, is reported to be gearing up for a legal and political battle, insisting he will not accept his removal from office without a fight.

This follows a decision by the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) to strip him of his position over alleged breaches of party discipline.

According to the report, tensions between Sifuna and the party leadership are intensifying, with both sides showing little sign of backing down.

The dispute is linked to differences in political positions and Sifuna’s recent actions, including spearheading the “Linda Mwananchi” campaign, which is said to conflict with the party’s official stance.

In response, Sifuna has indicated he will pursue legal action to challenge the decision, arguing that due process was not followed in the disciplinary proceedings against him.

His position signals the likelihood of a prolonged internal battle within one of Kenya’s leading opposition parties.

Political analysts warn that the standoff could have implications for ODM’s unity, particularly as the country edges closer to the 2027 electoral cycle.

Some fear the dispute could deepen divisions within the party if not resolved swiftly.

ODM officials have yet to issue a unified position on the next steps, as attention now shifts to the anticipated legal challenge by Sifuna.

The unfolding row is shaping up as a key test of the party’s internal cohesion in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
