Kevin Omwenga

The fatal shooting of Nairobi businessman Kevin Omwenga in August 2020 remains one of Kenya’s most disturbing urban crime cases, defined by mystery, shifting accounts, and a trail of unanswered questions.

Omwenga, a 28-year-old car dealer known within Nairobi’s fast-rising business circles, was shot dead on the night of August 21, 2020, inside his apartment in Kilimani.

What initially appeared to be a straightforward shooting quickly evolved into a complex investigation involving multiple suspects, conflicting testimonies, and alleged links to high-stakes dealings.

According to police reports and witness statements presented in court, Omwenga was in the company of several individuals on the night of his death.

Moments before the shooting, he is said to have entered a bedroom with one of the suspects. A gunshot was heard shortly afterward.

A postmortem later confirmed that Omwenga died from a single gunshot wound to the chest at close range, with the bullet piercing his heart.

The nature of the injury suggested a direct and fatal encounter, but questions immediately emerged over whether the shooting was intentional or accidental.

Initial accounts from the suspect indicated that the shooting may have been accidental, allegedly occurring during the handling of a firearm.

However, this version was strongly contested by a key witness, who later told investigators that the suspect deliberately lured Omwenga into a room before shooting him and attempting to stage the incident as self-inflicted.

The contradictions in these accounts became central to the case, raising doubts about the true sequence of events and motive behind the killing.

Investigators also explored the possibility of a business dispute, with reports suggesting that the incident may have been linked to a failed or contested deal.

While details of such dealings were never fully disclosed in court, the angle added another layer of intrigue to the case and intensified public scrutiny.

Two suspects, including a businessman and his bodyguard, were arrested and charged in connection with the murder.

Since then, the case has moved slowly through the court system, with proceedings focusing on witness testimony, forensic evidence, and CCTV footage from the apartment complex.

In a significant development years later, the High Court ordered full access to CCTV footage from the night of the incident, following concerns that earlier disclosures may have been incomplete.

The footage is expected to play a key role in clarifying movements within the apartment and potentially resolving contradictions in witness accounts.

The case took an even darker turn in 2021 when Omwenga’s younger brother, who was considered a key witness, was also found dead under unclear circumstances.

His death raised fresh concerns about the safety of witnesses and further complicated an already sensitive investigation.

Nearly six years later, the killing of Kevin Omwenga continues to resonate as a symbol of unresolved justice in Kenya’s urban crime landscape.

Despite arrests and ongoing court proceedings, critical questions about what exactly happened inside the Kilimani apartment — and why — remain unanswered.
