A fresh directive by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) requiring Kenyans registered before 2012 to verify their details or re-register has triggered concern over the credibility of the country’s voter database.

According to the commission’s chairman, all voters must have their biometric data fully captured to remain in the official register.

This requirement now places millions of Kenyans—particularly those registered before the introduction of biometric voter registration (BVR) in 2012—at risk of exclusion if they fail to comply.

The development, highlighted in the Saturday Standard, signals a significant shift in how IEBC intends to clean up and update the voter roll ahead of the next General Election

While the commission maintains the move is necessary to enhance transparency and eliminate irregularities, it has raised alarm over the potential scale of its impact.

IEBC argues that records captured before 2012 may lack critical biometric identifiers such as fingerprints, making it difficult to authenticate voters under the current system.

As a result, affected individuals are being urged to present themselves at registration centres for verification, with some required to undergo fresh registration.

However, the announcement has sparked debate among stakeholders, with critics warning that the exercise could disenfranchise unsuspecting voters.

Concerns have also emerged over whether adequate public awareness and logistical support will be provided to ensure all affected voters are reached within the timelines set by the commission.

Questions are now being raised about the integrity of the existing voter register, which has previously been a source of political contestation in Kenya.

The IEBC is expected to roll out an enhanced voter registration exercise in the coming months, targeting both new voters and those required to update their records.

As the country edges closer to the 2027 elections, the success of this process may prove critical in shaping public trust in the electoral outcome.
