The brutal murder of Agnes Jebet Tirop continues to cast a long shadow over Kenya’s athletics community, nearly five years after the 25-year-old star was found dead in her home in Iten, Elgeyo-Marakwet County.

Tirop, one of Kenya’s most promising long-distance runners, had just weeks earlier set a women-only 10km world record in Germany, cementing her status on the global stage.

Known for her discipline and quiet determination, she had built a reputation as a rising force in international athletics.

However, her life was cut short on the night of October 12, 2021, following a violent domestic altercation with her husband, Ibrahim Rotich

According to investigators, the incident followed a series of reported disputes within their relationship.

Police reports indicate that Tirop sustained multiple stab wounds to the neck and abdomen, with evidence suggesting a prolonged and violent struggle inside the house.

Authorities also noted damage to property outside the home, including smashed car windows, pointing to the intensity of the confrontation.

After the incident, Rotich fled the scene, later contacting family members in distress and reportedly admitting involvement in the killing. He was arrested days later in Mombasa after attempting to evade authorities.

Tirop’s body was discovered on October 13, 2021, after her father reported her missing, prompting police to visit her residence.

In subsequent court proceedings, Rotich admitted to causing her death but entered a plea of not guilty to murder charges, citing provocation and alleging suspicions of infidelity.

The case has since faced repeated delays, with adjournments prolonging the pursuit of justice for Tirop’s family.

The killing sparked national outrage and renewed focus on gender-based violence in Kenya, particularly cases involving intimate partners. Advocacy groups and members of the public have continued to call for expedited justice and stronger protections for victims.

Tirop’s death remains a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic violence, even among high-profile individuals. As the legal process continues, her family and supporters say they are still waiting for accountability.

Her legacy, however, endures through her achievements on the track and the conversations her death has ignited across the country.
