The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has strongly condemned the violent attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, confirming that investigations are underway to establish the motive and bring those responsible to justice.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at Java House located within West End Mall in Kisumu, where the senator was reportedly confronted and assaulted by a group of unidentified individuals.
The attack left him injured, prompting his evacuation to Nairobi for specialised medical treatment.
In an official statement, the DCI described the incident as a “brazen and cowardly attack,” terming it a serious breach of public safety and order.
The agency also extended its wishes for a swift recovery to the legislator, while expressing solidarity with his family and residents of Vihiga County.
“At this stage, the motive behind the attack has not been established,” the DCI said, signaling that investigations are still in the early stages.
However, detectives have already begun pursuing critical leads as part of an ongoing probe.
According to the agency, a detailed forensic review of CCTV footage from the scene is central to the investigation.
Officers are analysing surveillance recordings from the mall and surrounding areas in a bid to identify the attackers and reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the assault.
The DCI has urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could compromise the integrity of the investigation.
“We urge members of the public to remain calm, refrain from speculation, and allow investigations to proceed without interference,” the statement read.
Authorities have also reassured Kenyans of their commitment to accountability, stating that all those involved will be apprehended and prosecuted.
“The DCI is fully committed to getting to the bottom of this matter and will ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice,” the agency added.
The attack on Osotsi has sparked widespread concern among political leaders and the public, with many calling for enhanced security for elected officials amid rising political tensions.
While the motive remains unclear, investigators are not ruling out any possibilities, including politically motivated violence.
The DCI has pledged to keep the public informed as investigations progress, even as pressure mounts for swift arrests and clarity on the circumstances surrounding the attack.
