Former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Wednesday shared a public platform for the first time in years, raising speculation over a possible reconciliation following a bitter fallout during the 2022 elections.

The two leaders, once close allies, met at a burial ceremony in Kirinyaga County, where they were seen shaking hands and engaging cordially.

Their relationship had deteriorated sharply during the 2022 presidential campaigns, culminating in open political hostility and public criticism.

At the height of the fallout, Gachagua—then Deputy President-elect—publicly rebuked Kenyatta during President William Ruto’s inauguration, marking one of the most visible breaks between the former allies.

The tensions were further exacerbated by corruption allegations that had drawn Gachagua into conflict with Kenyatta’s administration.

However, Wednesday’s interaction suggested a shift in tone, with both leaders hinting at reconciliation and unity.

Speaking at the event, Kenyatta emphasized the need for political cohesion, saying the public was weary of divisive politics.

He noted that from his home in Ichaweri, the message from citizens was clear—leaders should prioritize unity over competition for political power.

Gachagua echoed similar sentiments, questioning the assumption that their relationship could not be repaired.

He described Kenyatta as an “elder brother” and kinsman, adding that their shared history could not be easily erased despite past political differences.

The meeting also drew reactions from other figures, including Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who suggested that the reunion could unsettle sections of government.

Kalonzo claimed some factions may not have anticipated such a development and could respond with political pressure.

The unexpected encounter has since triggered debate within political circles, with analysts interpreting it as a potential بداية of shifting alliances ahead of future political contests.

While neither Kenyatta nor Gachagua outlined concrete plans for collaboration, their public interaction marks a notable moment in Kenya’s evolving political landscape, where former rivals appear to be reconsidering their positions amid changing dynamics.
