Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johana Kipyegon Ngeno was laid to rest on Friday in an emotional ceremony attended by President William Ruto, senior government officials, political leaders and thousands of residents who gathered to honour the late legislator’s life and service.

The burial, held at Emurua Dikirr Primary School grounds in Narok County, followed Ngeno’s death in a helicopter crash in Nandi County that also claimed the lives of four other individuals.

The tragedy shocked the country and prompted an outpouring of tributes from leaders across the political divide who described Ngeno as a courageous and committed public servant.

In a message delivered on social media after the funeral service, President William Ruto described the late MP as a leader who dedicated his life to serving the people of Emurua Dikirr and the nation.

“Mheheshimiwa Johana Ng’eno lived a life of dedicated service, making a remarkable and lasting contribution to the welfare of his constituents, our nation, and humanity at large,” the President said.

Ruto noted that the legislator’s passing served as a reminder of the fleeting nature of life and the importance of service to others.

“His passing is a sobering reminder of our inevitable mortality, and a solemn call to each of us to give our very best, in every circumstance, whenever we have the opportunity to serve,” he added.

The Head of State also extended condolences to the family and relatives of the late MP and the other victims of the crash, praying for comfort during the difficult period.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki also joined thousands of mourners at the ceremony, describing Ngeno as a courageous leader who stood firmly for the interests of his constituents.

Speaking after the burial, Kindiki said the government would honour the development vision the late MP had for Emurua Dikirr Constituency.

“Johana Ng’eno served his people well and with great courage,” the Deputy President said.

He said the national government would continue pursuing projects that Ngeno had been advocating for in the constituency, including the issuance of title deeds to residents and addressing long-standing land issues related to conservation efforts in the Mau ecosystem.

According to Kindiki, plans are underway to compensate or resettle families who were evicted from parts of the Mau Forest during conservation efforts.

He also highlighted infrastructure development and education expansion as key priorities.

“The government will honour his vision for the people of Emurua Dikirr to get title deeds, compensation or resettlement for those who were evicted for purposes of conservation of the Mau ecosystem, tarmacking of key roads and establishment of a university campus in the area,” he said.

The Deputy President added that the burial brought together residents and national leaders in a show of solidarity with the families of those who died in the crash.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen also paid tribute to the late MP, describing him as a fearless leader who consistently defended the interests of his constituents.

“Hon. Johana Ng’eno was a courageous and visionary leader who cared deeply for his people,” Murkomen said.

He added that Ngeno had also been vocal in championing the welfare of creative artists and young talents across the country.

Murkomen joined President Ruto and other leaders at the burial ceremony and extended condolences to the MP’s family, including his mother Mary, his wife Naiyianoi, and their children Taparon and Chesang.

The Interior CS said the legacy left by the late legislator would continue to inspire many.

“His legacy lives on in his good deeds and the ideals he cherished,” Murkomen said.

He also paid tribute to the four aides who died alongside Ngeno in the crash, describing their deaths as a painful loss to their families and the community.

The victims included Wycliffe Kiprotich Ronoh, Amos Kipngetich Rotich, Nicholas Kiplangat Koskei and Robert Kipkoech Rono.

Murkomen called for prayers and support for the families affected by the tragedy, noting that the loss had deeply shaken many in the region.

Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago also delivered a heartfelt tribute, describing the late MP as both a close friend and a courageous leader.

Mandago said the burial marked a sombre moment for the community and the nation.

“History is written in somberness today as a brave son of our community and nation is laid to rest,” Mandago said.

He described Ngeno as more than a political colleague, recalling a personal friendship that extended beyond politics.

“Hon. Johana Kipyegon Ng’eno was not just a colleague; he was a dear friend. He was not just a friend; he was a brother. He was not just a brother but a confidant and a kindred spirit,” Mandago said.

The senator said Ngeno had consistently demonstrated courage in defending the interests of the people of Emurua Dikirr.

“As we lay my brother to rest, my heart goes out to his family who leaned on him as a father, the people of Emurua Dikirr whom he defended with his very life, and to our nation that admired his courageous leadership and conviction,” he added.

Ngeno had built a reputation as an outspoken legislator who strongly represented the interests of his constituency in national debates.

Residents and leaders who attended the burial described him as a leader who remained closely connected to the grassroots and actively engaged with local development issues.

The funeral ceremony drew large crowds from Narok County and neighbouring regions, with mourners lining the venue to pay their final respects.

Religious leaders who presided over the service urged the community to remain united and continue supporting the bereaved families.

As the country mourns the tragic loss, leaders called on Kenyans to remember the legacy of service left behind by the late MP and those who died alongside him.

For many residents of Emurua Dikirr, Johana Ngeno will be remembered as a fearless advocate who devoted his life to defending the interests of his people and pursuing development for his constituency.

With his burial now complete, leaders say the responsibility of continuing the projects and vision he championed will remain a shared duty for both the government and the community.
