Kenyan diplomacy reached a historic milestone this week as several senior leaders, led by President William Ruto, congratulated Ambassador Dr. Monica Kathina Juma on her appointment to dual senior positions at the United Nations.
Dr. Juma has been named Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), a recognition of her exceptional service in governance, diplomacy, and security.
President Ruto hailed the appointment as a moment of national pride, noting Dr. Juma’s “stellar performance” in previous assignments, including her recent tenure as National Security Advisor and Secretary to the National Security Council.
In a statement released on Friday, the Head of State said:
"Her service to Kenya has been marked by utmost professionalism and patriotism. She has delivered excellence in every assignment tasked to her, and her achievements have now earned her recognition on the international stage."
He further thanked UN Secretary-General António Guterres for appointing not only a Kenyan but a female leader, highlighting the significance of this milestone in a month dedicated to celebrating women’s achievements.
“Kenya is committed to multilateralism, and we look forward to our continued collaboration with the United Nations,” President Ruto added. He concluded his message with warm words: “Hongera Monica for this appointment, and Happy Women’s Day!”
The announcement has sparked widespread admiration across the country’s political and diplomatic circles.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki described the appointment as a testament to Kenya’s pool of world-class talent.
“Congratulations are in order, Dr. Monica Juma, on your appointment to the dual roles of Executive Director of UNODC and Director-General of UNOV. Through this appointment, the United Nations has once again drawn from the rich reserve of intellectual talent that Kenya possesses, choosing one of the most gifted daughters of our nation. Pongezi Monica,” he said.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi echoed the sentiments, emphasizing the global impact of Dr. Juma’s leadership.
“A proud moment for Kenya as Amb. Dr. Monica Juma is appointed Executive Director of UNODC and Director-General of UNOV. Congratulations to Dr. Juma on this well-deserved recognition of her outstanding leadership and distinguished service both at home and on the global stage. The appointment has also garnered praise from Kenya’s parliamentary leadership. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula lauded Dr. Juma’s expertise in security, diplomacy, and governance.

Monica Juma: A Career of Excellence
Dr. Monica Juma’s diplomatic and governmental career spans several decades and a wide array of strategic roles. She has previously served as Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Defence, and Energy, gaining extensive experience in international relations, security, and policy management.
Her diplomatic postings include serving as Kenya’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Djibouti and Permanent Representative to the African Union, IGAD, and UNECA.
Her academic credentials are equally impressive. Dr. Juma holds a PhD from the University of Oxford and graduate degrees from the University of Nairobi, reflecting a blend of scholarly rigor and practical experience.
Her leadership style has consistently been described as strategic, principled, and results-driven, qualities that have earned her recognition both domestically and internationally.
The United Nations appointment places Dr. Juma at the forefront of global efforts to address organized crime, drug trafficking, corruption, terrorism financing, and human trafficking.
