Nairobi County Executive Committee Member for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service Geoffrey Mosiria has called for unity and compassion following the deadly floods that struck parts of Nairobi, leaving several families grieving and others searching for missing relatives.
In a statement issued after the tragedy, Mosiria expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and the devastation caused by the heavy rains, describing the moment as painful for the entire city.
“Yesterday was not an easy day for all of us, the people of Nairobi. No one ever wishes for such a tragedy to happen—not the residents and not even the leaders,” he said.
Mosiria extended condolences to families who lost loved ones in the floods and urged residents to stand in solidarity with those affected.
“I extend my deepest condolences to the families that have lost their beloved ones. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this painful time,” he said, adding that some families are still searching for relatives who may have been swept away by raging floodwaters.
The county official acknowledged that the city faces longstanding infrastructural and environmental challenges that have contributed to recurring flooding.
“Yes, there may be challenges here and there, and the truth is that some of the problems we are facing today are historical. They did not start yesterday, and they cannot be solved overnight,” he said.
He noted that addressing the issues requires proper planning, honest reflection and collective action from both leaders and residents.
However, Mosiria cautioned against turning the tragedy into a political battleground, criticizing leaders who have taken to social media with what he termed insensitive messages.
“It is deeply unfortunate to see some leaders, especially those already eyeing political seats in 2027, using social media to post mocking or insensitive messages just to gain political mileage,” he said.
According to Mosiria, leadership should be demonstrated through responsibility and empathy, particularly during times of crisis.
“This is the time for compassion, unity and responsible leadership. Let us come together, support those affected and work collectively toward lasting solutions that will protect the lives of Nairobi residents,” he said.
The recent floods have once again exposed Nairobi’s vulnerability to heavy rains, with experts repeatedly calling for improved drainage systems and stronger disaster preparedness measures across the capital.
