Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has called for renewed opposition unity following a high-level meeting with Martha Karua, signaling early efforts to consolidate a coalition that could challenge the current administration.

In a statement released after the meeting, Salasya said his discussions with the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader focused on building a “strong and united opposition” capable of offering Kenyans a credible governance alternative.

“This evening, I had a tête-à-tête conversation with Hon Martha Karua regarding the need for a strong and united opposition,” Salasya said.

“I was truly encouraged to learn that she fully understands that Kenya needs a new chapter in governance—one that restores hope, strengthens our healthcare system, improves the quality of education, drives industrialization, and creates meaningful jobs for our people.”

Salasya said the talks explored how opposition parties can overcome internal divisions and align around a common agenda. He cited the need for political actors to prioritize national interests over partisan competition.

“We discussed how the different parties within the united opposition can put aside their individual interests and egos and instead put the country first,” he added.

“I was pleased to hear that she believes parties such as DCP, Wiper, Jubilee, DAP-K, and other like-minded partners can come together to build a formidable united opposition.”

The legislator further indicated that Karua expressed openness to working with multiple parties, pointing to ongoing behind-the-scenes engagements within opposition ranks.

Addressing recent political tours in Western Kenya, Salasya revealed that he had sought clarification from Karua on her absence during a visit to Kisumundogo Village.

“She assured me that when the united opposition team embarks on its next tour, she will be with us,” Salasya said, hinting at plans for coordinated grassroots mobilization.

In a notable move, Salasya outlined a list of political figures he believes could anchor a united alternative government.

These include former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, Public Service CS Justin Muturi, and Karua herself.

“The hope for Kenya’s transformation lies in leaders who are willing to unite for the common good,” he stated.

“United we stand, for a better Kenya.”
