Residents of Kayole lived under a cloud of fear for years as the notorious Gaza gang tightened its grip on parts of Nairobi’s Eastlands.

At the center of that criminal network was Teddy Kasanga, a shadowy figure who rose through the ranks to become one of the gang’s most feared leaders before his eventual death in a police crackdown.

Kasanga’s journey into crime began in the informal settlements of Kayole, an area long associated with gang activity fueled by poverty, unemployment, and weak enforcement structures.

He is believed to have started as a junior member of the Gaza gang, operating under the command of Paul Mwaniki, also known as Mwanee Sparta, a figure widely feared in Nairobi’s underworld.

Unlike more outspoken gang members, Kasanga built his reputation quietly. Those familiar with the group’s operations describe him as calculated and disciplined, traits that quickly earned him trust within the gang’s inner circle.

Over time, he became a key operational figure, coordinating activities and ensuring missions were executed with precision.

The Gaza gang was linked to a string of violent crimes across Kayole, Dandora, and Embakasi. These included armed robberies, carjackings, and attacks on civilians, often carried out in broad daylight.

Victims were frequently subjected to brutal violence, while businesses and public transport operators were targeted in well-organized raids.

Kasanga’s rise to the top came after the killing of Mwanee Sparta during a police operation. The gang, which had been left unstable by the loss of its leader, reorganized under new command.

It was during this period that Kasanga is believed to have taken control, steering the group through one of its most aggressive phases.

Under his leadership, the gang became more elusive and unpredictable. Members frequently changed hideouts, making it difficult for authorities to track them.

At the same time, their attacks continued, further instilling fear among residents and drawing increased attention from security agencies.

The situation escalated after reports emerged linking gang members to the killing of police officers. This marked a turning point, prompting a coordinated response from law enforcement.

Specialized units, including the Flying Squad and Recce officers, launched targeted operations aimed at dismantling the gang.

As pressure mounted, Kasanga reportedly went into hiding, shifting between locations within and outside Nairobi to evade arrest.

Areas such as Tala were mentioned as possible hideouts, though authorities maintained that he remained within their surveillance network.

The crackdown intensified, leading to the arrest and killing of several gang members. The once tightly organized Gaza network began to weaken as its leadership structure collapsed under sustained operations.

Kasanga’s final moments came during one such operation. Acting on intelligence, security officers moved in swiftly, leading to a brief but deadly confrontation.

He was killed, bringing an end to his reign and effectively crippling what remained of the Gaza gang.

His death was received with mixed reactions in Kayole. For many residents, it marked a turning point and offered a sense of relief after years of insecurity.

However, others viewed it as part of a recurring cycle, where the fall of one gang leader often creates space for another to emerge.
