Activist Boniface Mwangi has accused the government of orchestrating violence that disrupted a Linda Mwananchi rally in Nyahururu, where a driver was shot and several supporters injured.

The Sunday incident saw chaos erupt after suspected goons attacked leaders and supporters, pelting stones and blocking sections of the convoy.

The situation escalated into a shooting, leaving a driver attached to Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata nursing a gunshot wound.

In a strongly worded statement, Mwangi claimed the violence was deliberate and politically motivated, directly linking it to President William Ruto’s administration.

“The violence directed at the leadership and supporters of the Linda Mwananchi movement by Ruto’s regime is deliberate. It is designed to instil fear and discourage citizens from attending their political rallies,” Mwangi said.

He further argued that the disruption reflects what he termed as “growing desperation” within the government, alleging that authorities are unable to mobilise significant public support without interference tactics.

“This reflects growing desperation on Ruto’s part — he cannot even pull a modest organic crowd of 50 people,” he added.

The activist also criticised the conduct of security agencies, accusing rogue officers of working alongside hired groups to target civilians.

His remarks come amid claims by rally organisers that police either failed to act or were overwhelmed during the attack.

“The rogue police officers and goons he is using to target innocent citizens will face the wrath of the people sooner rather than later,” Mwangi stated.

Mwangi’s comments introduce a sharper political dimension to an incident that has already drawn condemnation from several leaders.

Other politicians allied to the Linda Mwananchi movement have similarly questioned the role of security agencies, citing previous disruptions of their events in different parts of the country.

Despite the accusations, there has been no immediate official response from the government addressing Mwangi’s claims.

Police have also yet to provide a comprehensive account of the events, including clarifying who fired the shot that injured the driver.

The incident comes at a time of heightened political activity, particularly around the Ol Kalou by-election, where mobilisation efforts have intensified.

As investigations remain ongoing, the Nyahururu violence adds to growing concerns over political tolerance and the safety of public gatherings.
