Edwin Kiprotich Kipruto, widely known as Edwin Chiloba, was not just another young Kenyan pursuing a dream. At 25, he had carved out a space for himself in fashion and modeling, steadily building a name defined by creativity, boldness, and self-expression.
Those who knew him describe a young man who was unapologetically visible in a society where such openness often attracts scrutiny and risk.
On the night of December 31, 2022, Chiloba returned to his home in Eldoret after a night out. He shared the residence with his roommate, Jacktone Odhiambo. What transpired within those walls, investigators would later conclude, was not spontaneous. It was calculated.
Days later, on January 3, a boda boda rider along the Kipkenyo-Hurlingham road noticed unusual activity. A vehicle had briefly stopped by the roadside. Its number plates were concealed.
From it, a metal box was offloaded and abandoned before the car sped away into the night. Suspicious of the circumstances, the rider alerted authorities.
Police officers who responded to the scene made a grim discovery. Inside the metal box was a human body, already in the early stages of decomposition.
The victim had been dressed in women’s clothing and physically compressed to fit into the container. It was later confirmed to be Chiloba.
A post-mortem conducted at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital revealed the cause of death as suffocation. Socks had been forced into his mouth, while denim fabric was tightly wrapped around his face, effectively blocking his airways.
Evidence also indicated that he had been sexually assaulted before his death. The findings pointed to a deliberate and prolonged act, rather than an isolated incident.
Investigations quickly led to the arrest of Odhiambo, alongside other individuals believed to have assisted in disposing of the body.
As the case progressed through the courts, details emerged linking the killing to a personal relationship. Prosecutors argued that the crime had been carefully planned and executed.
The court ultimately found Odhiambo guilty of murder. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison, bringing a measure of legal closure to a case that had drawn national attention and sparked widespread debate.
Beyond the courtroom, Chiloba’s death raised broader questions about safety, vulnerability, and the lived experiences of individuals who exist outside societal norms. Activists and observers pointed to the case as a reflection of deeper tensions, highlighting the risks faced by those who choose to express themselves openly.
Friends and colleagues remember Chiloba as vibrant and fearless—a creative force who pushed boundaries through his work. He had ambitions of growing his fashion brand and making a mark in the industry.
His life, however, was cut short under brutal circumstances.
In the end, his story is not only about a crime, but also about a life interrupted.
A young man with promise, whose journey ended in violence, leaving behind unanswered questions and a lasting impact on conversations around identity, safety, and justice in Kenya.
