Emurua Dikir MP Johana Ngeno, who died in the recent helicopter crash in Nandi County, has been remembered for his courage, conviction, and staunch defense of the marginalized, according to former Azimio chief agent in the 2022 general elections, Saitabao Ole Kanchory.
In a statement shared on X, Ole Kanchory reflected on Ngeno’s unique leadership, highlighting his dedication to the Kipsigis and Maasai communities.
“Many of you may not know, but there was a curse spoken in parables by then President Moi to the Kipsigis community that he settled in Narok and Kilgoris. He told them, ‘I brought you here. Eat everything but leave the head to the owners. Don’t eat the tongue.’ This became an unwritten rule until 2013 when Johana Ng’eno was elected MP of Emurua Dikirr, a constituency in Kilgoris specifically carved out for the Kipsigis,” he wrote.
Ole Kanchory described Ngeno, who embraced his Maasai nickname 'Ngong' meaning ‘one-eyed,’ as a fearless advocate for his people.
“Hon. Ngeno was a fearless defender of the rights of his people, especially the poor and vulnerable. I personally greatly admired Ng’eno’s courage, conviction, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of his people,” he added.
Ngeno’s tenure was marked by bold interventions on behalf of the marginalized, with Ole Kanchory emphasizing that the Maa Nation has long lacked strong leadership.
“My people, the Maa Nation, who have been leaderless for far too long, need such a bold and uncompromising leader,” he said.
The former Azimio chief agent also reflected on the broader significance of Ngeno’s life.
“The world is a stage where we all come to play and go. Go in peace Hon. Johana 'Ngong' Ng’eno,” he wrote, paying tribute to the MP’s enduring impact.
Ngeno, who rose to prominence in 2013, became a symbol of fearless leadership in Kilgoris and the larger Rift Valley region.
He was known not only for his advocacy but also for embracing his cultural identity, earning respect across communities for his integrity and principled stance on local and national matters.
His untimely death has sparked an outpouring of grief from colleagues, constituents, and political allies, many of whom have praised his dedication to public service and the protection of the marginalized.
As the nation mourns, Ngeno’s legacy as a determined and uncompromising leader remains a defining feature of his political career.
