A fresh standoff has emerged between Standard Group and President William Ruto after the Head of State accused the media house of blackmail, triggering a firm response from the publisher.

The dispute began after President Ruto criticised The Standard over its coverage of his administration, claiming the outlet had been running persistent negative headlines aimed at pressuring his government.

In his remarks, the President dismissed the coverage as “extortionist propaganda” and insisted that his administration would not yield to what he termed as blackmail.

In a swift response, The Standard defended its editorial independence, stating that it would not be intimidated or coerced in the course of its work.

The media house maintained that its role is to inform the public, educate citizens, and hold those in power accountable.

The publication stressed that press freedom is central to Kenya’s democratic system, warning that attempts to interfere with independent journalism undermine governance and public trust.

It pointed to what it described as growing pressure on the media, including political messaging and other efforts aimed at influencing coverage.

“The Standard will not bow to blackmail,” the statement said, adding that its reporting is guided by facts and the public interest. The outlet also made it clear that its editorial decisions are not for sale and cannot be influenced by external forces.

The media house further challenged the President to uphold democratic principles, noting that leadership is tested by how it responds to criticism.

It added that respecting media freedom is a constitutional duty, not a favour to journalists.

The exchange has drawn attention to the relationship between the government and the media, with analysts warning that such confrontations could affect public confidence in key institutions.

The situation also raises broader questions about the space for independent journalism in Kenya.
