Activist Boniface Mwangi has accused the government of targeting journalists following the attempted abduction of a Standard Group associate editor in Nakuru on Saturday.
The incident involved armed men who reportedly tried to seize the editor before he escaped, raising fresh concerns about the safety of media practitioners in Kenya. Authorities have yet to provide a detailed account of the motive or identify the suspects involved.
Reacting to the development, Mwangi directly blamed President William Ruto, claiming the incident reflects a broader pattern of intimidation against critical voices.
In a statement, the activist alleged that the government is increasingly hostile to journalists and dissenting opinions.
“President Ruto has decided to go after journalists,” Mwangi said. He further claimed that the Head of State fears losing the 2027 general election and is attempting to silence scrutiny.
Mwangi argued that intimidation tactics, including alleged abductions and arrests, would not change the political outcome.
His remarks come at a time of heightened tension between sections of the media and the government, following recent criticism directed at the Standard Group over its editorial stance.
The media house has previously defended its reporting, maintaining that it operates independently and in the public interest.
While Mwangi’s claims reflect concerns shared by some civil society actors, the government has not officially responded to his latest remarks.
In past statements, state officials have denied targeting journalists and have instead emphasized the need for responsible reporting within the law.
The attempted abduction has, however, intensified debate on press freedom and journalist safety in Kenya.
Media stakeholders warn that such incidents, whether politically motivated or criminal in nature, risk creating a chilling effect on reporting, especially on sensitive political issues.
Investigations into the Nakuru incident remain ongoing, with police yet to announce any arrests. Meanwhile, calls are growing for authorities to ensure accountability and guarantee the safety of journalists across the country.
