People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has shared a personal tribute to pilot George Were, who was among six people killed in the helicopter crash in Nandi County that also claimed the life of Johanna Ngeno.
In a statement following the tragedy, Karua said one of the six victims was known to her personally.
She identified the pilot, Mr George Were, as “a good man with a warm demeanor,” describing his passing as a deeply painful loss.
Karua recalled that Were had previously flown her during the 2022 Azimio presidential campaign, navigating long travel days, difficult terrain and demanding schedules.
She said he carried out his duties with professionalism and calm focus under pressure.
According to the PLP leader, Were’s character stood out beyond his aviation skills.
She described him as patient and considerate, noting that he maintained composure even in high-pressure political environments. His presence, she said, brought reassurance during intense moments on the campaign trail.
Karua extended her thoughts beyond the individuals she personally knew, stating that she was thinking of all six families affected by the crash.
She expressed hope that they would find strength during what she termed an incredibly difficult time.
The crash, which occurred in Mosop, Nandi County, has triggered investigations into its cause as leaders across the political spectrum continue to mourn.
Tributes have poured in for the victims, with special recognition given to Ngeno, a serving legislator for Emurua Dikirr.
As the nation comes to terms with the loss, Karua’s remarks highlighted not only the public service of the leaders involved but also the human stories behind the tragedy.
