Former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has sharply criticized Wajir County leadership, accusing them of mismanaging nearly KES 200 billion in devolved funds.

Speaking on social media, Gachagua described the county as “unattractive,” citing poor infrastructure, lack of electricity, and inadequate water and sanitation services.

“Since devolution began in 2013, Wajir County alone has received almost KES 200 billion in public funds. Yet, the county remains unattractive; characterized by poor infrastructure, ungoverned spaces, and a lack of electricity,” Gachagua wrote.

He questioned how a two-term Governor and current Council of Governors chairman could preside over such massive spending while the population continues to suffer.

Gachagua highlighted the ongoing water shortages, calling them “perennial” and stressing that even minimal budget allocation could have alleviated the crisis.

“This failure feels even more painful as the Holy Month of Ramadan approaches in two weeks; families face daily life with no water, no decent sanitation, no electricity, no functional healthcare facilities and with no reliable infrastructure,” he said.

Gachagua urged the county leadership to prioritize basic services over public appearances and media engagements in Nairobi.

He warned that leaders would ultimately be held accountable not only by citizens but also in the eyes of divine justice.

“Be fair, be just and be true to the Ummah who entrusted you with their fate. How does it feel to have your county with no decent sanitation system for over 60 years since independence and more than 13 years of devolved funding?” he questioned.

He appealed directly to Wajir leaders to urgently address water, sanitation, and healthcare challenges.
