Kakamega Homeboyz Football Club has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of one of its players, Silas Abungana, in a development that has shocked the Kenyan football community.

In a statement shared on social media, the club confirmed that Abungana passed away just minutes before midnight on Wednesday, February 4, while undergoing treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital.

He had been admitted after sustaining severe head injuries during a violent attack on the night of Tuesday, February 3.

The club described Abungana’s death as untimely and devastating, noting that the loss has deeply affected players, technical staff, officials, and supporters.

Details surrounding the circumstances of the attack were not disclosed, but the statement indicated that the injuries proved fatal despite medical intervention.

“During this incredibly difficult time, we respectfully request privacy for Silas’ family, teammates, friends, and club officials as we come to terms with this unimaginable loss,” the club said, adding that further communication would be issued in due course.

Abungana’s death comes at a time when concerns over player safety and security continue to feature prominently in Kenyan football discourse.

While the club did not link the incident to football-related activities, the tragedy has reignited calls for greater protection of athletes both on and off the pitch.

Tributes poured in online from fans and fellow footballers, with many describing Abungana as a committed player whose life was cut short under tragic circumstances.

As investigations are expected to continue, the focus remains on mourning a young footballer whose career and life ended abruptly.
