Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Wednesday evening led United Opposition leaders in a meeting with Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials, expressing deep concerns over the credibility of the electoral body ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking after the engagement, Kalonzo said the opposition views the IEBC as increasingly biased, describing it as “widely perceived as a William Ruto commission.”

He added that this perception is not limited to political opponents but is increasingly shared by the public, challenging the Commission to restore confidence through tangible actions.

The opposition also questioned the procurement process for the Key Integrated Electronic Management Systems (KIEMS) kits, warning against the involvement of Smartmatic, a company previously linked to election irregularities in other countries.

“We do not want Smartmatic anywhere near our electoral systems,” Kalonzo stated.

In addition, concerns were raised over the continued tenure of IEBC CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan.

Kalonzo outlined specific issues undermining confidence in Marjan’s leadership and called for decisive action to restore transparency and accountability within the Commission.

The United Opposition urged the IEBC to take immediate steps to ensure that all electoral processes are credible and transparent, warning that public trust will remain fragile unless reforms are implemented.

“Our message is clear: transparency, accountability, and decisive action are non-negotiable if Kenyans are to have confidence in the 2027 elections,” Kalonzo said.

The meeting reflects growing tensions between the opposition and the electoral body, with political analysts noting that early disputes over electoral management could shape the pre-election climate and public trust in Kenya’s democratic institutions.
