At a time when Kenya’s political landscape was marked by tension and uncertainty, former Member of Parliament Fredrick Oduya Oprong became a living symbol of survival after a brutal assassination attempt left him with a bullet lodged in his head for more than two decades.
Oprong, a veteran politician who served as MP for Busia North and later Amagoro, was among the country’s early post-independence leaders.
He also held a senior government position as Assistant Minister for Planning and Economic Development during the KANU era, navigating a complex political period under Presidents Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel arap Moi.
His life took a dramatic turn in the early 1990s when gunmen attacked him at his Nairobi residence in Mariakani Estate. According to reports, the assailants struck as he arrived home, opening fire at close range.
He sustained two gunshot wounds to the head in what was widely believed to be a targeted assassination attempt, though the motive and perpetrators were never conclusively identified.
The attack left him critically injured. Oprong was initially treated in Nairobi before being flown abroad for specialized care.
He was later transferred to hospitals in London and the United States, where he reportedly spent months in a coma before regaining consciousness.
Medical experts faced a difficult decision during his treatment. While some bullet fragments were addressed, one remained lodged deep in his brain.
Doctors concluded that attempting to remove it posed a significant risk to his life. As a result, Oprong lived with the bullet embedded in his head for the rest of his life.
The long-term impact of the injuries was severe. The former MP suffered lasting health complications and physical disability, significantly altering his public and political life.
Despite this, his survival became a point of public attention, often cited as a rare and remarkable medical case.
Oprong died on May 25, 2019, at the age of 83 while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.
By the time of his death, the bullet fragments had remained in his head for roughly 25 years.
His story remains a stark reminder of the risks associated with political life during Kenya’s turbulent transition years.
It also stands as a testament to human resilience, as a leader who once shaped national policy endured one of the most extreme consequences of political violence and lived to tell the tale.
