A wave of confusion and outrage has emerged at Butere Girls High School after a teacher who had been reported dead resurfaced alive, prompting parents to demand disciplinary action.
Mr Dickson Muganda, a Biology and Chemistry teacher at the school, had been declared dead earlier this week after reports circulated that a body recovered from River Sasala was believed to be his.
The news spread quickly among teachers and parents, triggering grief and shock within the school community.
In a message shared on a teachers’ WhatsApp group, one of his colleagues, Ms Jael Gudu, announced the alleged death.
“It is a sad day for Butere Girls, one of the teachers, Dickson Muganda (Bio/Chemistry) is dead. His body was found in River Sasala near his home,” she wrote.
“We join the family and friends in prayer following the loss of Mwalimu Muganda.”
However, the situation took an unexpected turn when Muganda resurfaced at his home alive, just as burial arrangements for the unidentified body were reportedly underway.
A subsequent update clarified the earlier report.
“Kindly let us wait for official confirmation from our principal. It’s a confusing situation since the report came from his immediate family,” Ms Gudu stated.
“The body retrieved from the river was not that of our teacher… He resurfaced yesterday evening and I have confirmed that he is alive and well.”
Despite relief among colleagues, parents have raised concerns over the teacher’s unexplained disappearance, which lasted several days.
During that time, his phone remained unreachable, heightening fears over his safety.
Some parents have now reported the matter to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), accusing him of misconduct.
“This caused unnecessary panic. The TSC code of conduct is clear on desertion of duty and misleading behaviour,” a parent involved in the complaint said.
Questions are now being raised over how the mistaken death report originated, especially after it was reportedly confirmed by close family members.
