President William Ruto has outlined a series of multi-billion shilling development projects targeting Bungoma County, signalling a renewed push to transform the region’s infrastructure, housing, and agricultural sectors.

Speaking after hosting grassroots leaders from Bungoma at State House Nairobi, led by Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, the President said the government is implementing deliberate programmes aimed at improving livelihoods and unlocking economic growth in the county.

Ruto announced that a KSh30 billion investment is currently driving affordable housing projects across Bungoma.

The plan includes the construction of an 18,000-unit smart city within Bungoma town, alongside 15 modern markets and new student hostels.

According to the President, the projects are designed to address housing shortages while creating employment opportunities for local residents.

“We are transforming the face of Bungoma through deliberate projects and programmes,” Ruto said, adding that the housing initiative is part of a broader national agenda to provide dignified living conditions and stimulate local economies.

In the health sector, the President revealed that KSh8 billion has been secured for the construction of a Level 6 hospital in Bungoma.

The facility is expected to improve access to specialised medical services in the region, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances to referral hospitals in other counties.

Infrastructure development also featured prominently in the President’s announcement. Ruto confirmed that the Rironi-Mau Summit road will be extended to Eldoret, Bungoma, and the Malaba border.

The expansion is expected to ease transportation challenges along the Northern Corridor, a critical trade route linking Kenya to neighbouring countries.

“The extension of this road will enhance mobility and unlock the region’s economic potential,” he noted.

On agriculture, the President pointed to ongoing reforms in the sugar sector, stating that changes have improved the welfare of cane farmers in Bungoma and across the wider sugar belt.

He said the reforms are ensuring that farmers receive timely and better payments for their produce.

The meeting with Bungoma leaders comes amid increased government focus on regional development as part of its broader economic agenda.
