Former Deputy President and Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has urged voters in Ol Kalou to turn out in large numbers and “defend their dignity” as the constituency holds a crucial by-election on Thursday, July 16.

In a social media message delivered to residents early in the morning, Gachagua invoked the legacy of Mau Mau fighters, referencing JM Kariuki and Dedan Kimathi as symbols of resistance and sacrifice.

He called on voters to draw inspiration from the struggle against colonial rule and reject any form of voter inducement.

“We are priceless and will never sell our birthright to anyone, no matter the price,” Gachagua said, in remarks aimed at energising turnout and discouraging electoral malpractice.

The former deputy president commended early voters, particularly young people who he said had taken on the responsibility of escorting elderly citizens to polling stations.

He described their actions as a “cardinal duty” in safeguarding democracy and ensuring broad participation in the electoral process.

Gachagua also praised women in the constituency for what he termed as their guiding role in preserving community values.

He urged those yet to vote to do so before mid-morning, referencing an earlier directive that supporters of his political cause should have cast their ballots by 11 a.m.

“As our mothers and the elderly return home, the young and strong must remain vigilant to ensure the will of the people is protected,” he added, signaling concerns about the integrity of the vote.

The DCP leader further said he was encouraged by reports of long queues and high voter turnout across polling stations, describing it as a sign that residents were determined to “restore their pride.”

Gachagua concluded his message with a symbolic gesture, stating that he had prayed facing Mt. Kenya and expressed confidence that the outcome of the by-election would reflect the people’s will.

The Ol Kalou by-election has drawn significant political attention, with turnout and voter conduct expected to play a decisive role in shaping the final outcome.
