During a recent interview on Citizen TV, lawyer Paul Mwangi offered a rare insider analysis of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s political character, shedding light on aspects often overlooked by the public and political commentators.

His observations painted a picture of a leader defined by strategic calculation, adaptability, and disciplined opposition.

Raila Odinga: The Dual-Nature Politician

Mwangi emphasized Raila’s dual political identity. On one hand, Raila displayed a calculated, diplomatic side focused on negotiations, coalition-building, and handshakes with political rivals.

On the other, he wielded a confrontational, activist-driven persona to exert pressure when negotiations faltered.

“This militant side,” Mwangi explained, “became particularly visible after the disputed 2017 elections.” Raila’s formation of the National Resistance Movement, led by General Miguna Miguna, exemplified his ability to transform dissent into an organized political force.

The movement employed civil disobedience, economic boycotts, and public demonstrations as tools to challenge the legitimacy of Uhuru Kenyatta’s presidency, demonstrating Raila’s strategic formalization of opposition.

Strategic Ambiguity: A Political Tool

According to Mwangi, Raila deliberately cultivated unpredictability.

By keeping allies and opponents uncertain of his next move, he maintained strategic leverage and avoided being cornered politically. Mwangi stressed that Raila’s public ambiguity did not indicate a lack of direction.

“He often had a clear endgame,” Mwangi noted, “but avoided prematurely revealing his intentions.”

Mwangi cautioned against speculation about Raila’s positions, noting that many public claims about what Raila allegedly said are often interpretations molded to suit political interests.

Safeguarding Raila’s Legacy

Mwangi highlighted Raila’s mastery in managing influence and timing. His political style, he said, was rooted in calculation, self-control, and knowing when to advance, hold back, or make sacrifices for the country.

“Current political players seem more driven by ego than restraint,” Mwangi observed, pointing out that only future choices will reveal who truly embodies Raila’s legacy.

He further noted that although Raila was complex and multifaceted, there is no need for anyone to emulate him fully. “No one can fill his shoes,” Mwangi asserted.

Raila vs Gachagua: The Opposition Playbook

Mwangi contrasted Raila’s approach to opposition politics with that of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Raila, he explained, backed his allegations with tangible evidence, relying on a structured network of legal experts, economists, and political operatives.

This method lent credibility to his claims, including in high-profile cases like the Eurobond scandal.

In contrast, Mwangi questioned whether Gachagua and other current opposition figures maintain the same level of documentation and research.

“Without verifiable proof,” he warned, “claims risk being dismissed as mere political rhetoric rather than grounded critique.”

Mwangi’s analysis offered a nuanced reminder of Raila Odinga’s political depth and the challenges in preserving the integrity of his legacy in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
