The national government has rolled out a major rural roads improvement programme in Nyamira County, targeting over 60 kilometres of key link roads in a move aimed at enhancing connectivity and unlocking economic activity.

Interior and National Administration Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the works, being undertaken by the Kenya Rural Roads Authority, focus on routine maintenance and upgrades across critical transport corridors that serve local communities.

According to Omollo, the project covers several strategic routes, including the 23.5-kilometre stretch from Eronge (D209) through Kebuse, Kahawa, Memisi and Tembwo Border to Borabu TTC and Omonyenya.

Other sections include the Amakara–Isoge–Chebilat road (16 km), the Chencha–Simbauti–Tindereti–Nyansiongo Mission link (13 km), and the 7.6-kilometre corridor connecting the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ATSU) to Prince Dan High School via Saiga Ngiya and Kineni Junction.

He noted that the upgrades are designed to create an integrated road network that will significantly improve mobility within the county while linking remote areas to major transport routes.

“The upgraded roads will open up previously hard-to-reach areas, making it easier for residents to access essential government services and markets,” Omollo said.

The project is expected to deliver economic benefits, particularly for farmers who rely on road networks to transport produce. Improved accessibility is also projected to stimulate local trade and reduce travel time across the region.

Security agencies are also set to benefit, especially along routes near the border with Sotik Sub-County in Bomet County, where enhanced road infrastructure is expected to improve surveillance and response times.

Omollo added that the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration will ensure that administrative services remain accessible along the upgraded routes, enabling residents to reach government offices, health facilities and other essential institutions more efficiently.

The initiative forms part of broader government efforts to strengthen rural infrastructure as a foundation for inclusive growth.
