Carlos Kipkoech Keter, a newly employed teacher at Kaplong Girls High School, was among six people who perished in Saturday’s helicopter crash in Nandi County alongside Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ngeno.
The tragedy has left communities across the South Rift in mourning.
In a Facebook tribute, Orchole Araap Chepkulei described Keter as a young leader with a remarkable ability to mobilize youth.
Born into the Chepoore family of the Posuetek clan among the Kipsigis, he was known for his determination and conviction.
By 2016, Keter had already begun gaining recognition for his political activism and leadership among young people.
He first rose to prominence after forming the Youth Ambassadors, a movement aimed at socially and politically empowering young men.
The group later rebranded as Siriaek, providing its members with purpose, mentorship, and a platform to engage in civic affairs.
The movement also aligned with leaders championing Jubilee Party ideals, placing Keter at the center of South Rift youth politics.
Following this period of activism, Keter stepped into the corridors of national power. After the 2017 General Election, he secured a role in the protocol office of then Deputy President William Ruto.
His work in the office exposed him to high-level government operations, yet he remained committed to personal growth and education. He later returned to university to complete his studies, graduating before embarking on his career in teaching.
Earlier this year, Keter reconciled with MP Ngeno, with whom he had previously had political disagreements. Through this reconciliation, he finally secured employment as a teacher at Kaplong Girls, marking a new chapter in his life.
Tragically, he never had the chance to earn his first salary, as the helicopter crash claimed his life before he could fully step into this new role.
Colleagues and friends remember Keter not for wealth or titles but for his courage, leadership, and commitment to youth empowerment.
His journey from grassroots activism to State House exposure and finally to the classroom exemplified resilience and determination.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing. Families and community members continue to pay tribute to the six victims, mourning the loss of promising leadership and dedicated service to society.
