The killing of Nairobi Hospital’s acting finance director, Eric Onchari Maigo, has continued to raise questions over motive, circumstances, and the credibility of the suspect’s defence, following a brutal attack that left the 38-year-old with 25 stab wounds.

Maigo, a finance professional with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Master’s from the University of Nairobi, had recently risen to a senior role at the hospital. Colleagues and family described him as calm, disciplined, and deeply committed to his work.

He lived alone at Woodley Annex-Upper in Kilimani, Nairobi, maintaining close ties with his family in Kisii County.

However, relatives later revealed that Maigo had expressed concerns about his safety after his promotion, citing what he described as a toxic work environment.

On the night of September 14, 2023, Maigo returned home accompanied by a woman later identified as Ann Adhiambo Ouma, also known by several aliases.

Investigators believe the two had no prior relationship, with the suspect claiming they met for the first time that evening.

By the following morning, the situation had turned fatal.

According to early statements made by the suspect, she alleged that Maigo attempted to sexually assault her, prompting her to retaliate. Police reports indicate Maigo sustained 25 stab wounds to the chest, neck, and face.

Notably, detectives observed the absence of defensive injuries on his hands, raising questions about whether he was incapacitated at the time of the attack.

Neighbours reported hearing distress sounds from the house but were unable to gain access. The suspect allegedly remained inside but refused to open the door.

By the time authorities arrived, she had fled the scene, reportedly escaping through a window and over a perimeter wall. Two blood-stained kitchen knives were recovered.

Maigo’s body was discovered the next morning lying beside his bed in a pool of blood.

Police launched a manhunt, releasing CCTV images that led to Ouma’s arrest on September 26 in Kibera. Forensic evidence, including DNA, linked her to the crime scene.

She was charged with murder under sections 203 and 204 of the Penal Code. Initially pleading guilty in October 2023, she later changed her plea to not guilty in November before Justice Diana Kavedza, shifting the case into full trial proceedings.

Maigo was buried on September 29 at his family home in Kisii. His family continues to demand justice, maintaining he was innocent, while investigators work to establish the full truth behind his final hours.
