Kilifi North MP Owen Baya has announced the death of his mother, Dorothy Baya Mweri, in a deeply emotional statement that has shed light on her final days and the strong Christian faith that defined her life.
In a family announcement shared on Tuesday, the Deputy Majority Leader confirmed that his mother passed away on Monday night at 9:32 PM.
The message, issued on behalf of close family members, described her death as a profound loss to the Canon Mweri family and the wider community.
“On behalf of myself and my wife Aisha, and the entire Canon Mweri Family, I announce the sad news of the passing on of our mother Dorothy Baya Mweri. May God rest her soul in eternal peace,” Baya stated.
Beyond the formal announcement, the legislator offered a personal account that revealed the emotional and spiritual journey leading up to her passing.
According to Baya, his mother had foreseen her death months earlier and convened a family meeting in November 2025 to prepare her children.
During the meeting, she reportedly told her children that she felt her time on earth was coming to an end, describing it as a divine calling she could not resist.
She urged them to remain united and uphold the values she had instilled in them.
In her final instructions, she tasked Baya with holding the family together, assigned her daughter Charity Mapenzi the role of nurturing the siblings, and entrusted Bishop Alphonce Mwaro with overseeing the family’s spiritual wellbeing.
“She told us her days were few and that she had fulfilled God’s purpose. It was difficult to accept, but she was firm,” Baya recounted.
The family later organised a dinner on November 23, fulfilling her wish to gather everyone together before her passing.
However, her health deteriorated weeks later in December, when she suffered a severe medical episode that required hospitalisation.
Baya recalled pleading for more time during the Christmas period, expressing hope that she would recover.
“On Christmas Eve, I asked God for just one more day,” he said, noting that she was eventually discharged on Christmas Day, an event the family viewed as a moment of divine intervention.
Her passing on March 30 has since drawn messages of condolence from leaders and residents across Kilifi County, many recognising her role in raising a family deeply rooted in faith and public service.
