Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka held a high-level dinner with Kenyans living abroad, highlighting the critical role the diaspora plays in sustaining households and the national economy.
In a statement on social media, Kalonzo said the meeting provided a “candid and deeply engaging” space to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing Kenyans abroad.
He acknowledged that while many have built new lives overseas, they continue to support families back home, often under the strain of a worsening economic climate, rising taxation, and limited opportunities for young people.
“Their sacrifice keeps many homes standing,” he noted.
The discussions also focused on investment potential within the diaspora community. Kalonzo emphasized that Kenyans abroad are keen to invest in enterprise, property, innovation, and development projects.
However, he stressed that predictable policies, transparent frameworks, and safeguards are essential to inspire confidence and protect their investments.
Another key topic was the safety and dignity of Kenyans working abroad.
Kalonzo referenced the experiences of citizens caught in the Russia–Ukraine conflict, noting that such incidents expose gaps in labour migration systems.
He also highlighted concerns raised by last year’s New York Times investigation into Kenya’s labour export programmes, which revealed inadequate protection for workers and structures that prioritise export over safety.
“These revelations have heightened anxiety within the diaspora about oversight, accountability, and the value placed on Kenyan lives abroad. These are issues that demand transparency and decisive action,” Kalonzo said.
Speaking as the “alternative government in waiting,” Kalonzo reaffirmed Wiper’s commitment to placing diaspora welfare, dignity, and economic empowerment at the heart of national policy.
“Kenyans in the diaspora are not distant observers; they are an integral part of our nation’s present and future. Their voices matter. Their contribution matters. Their welfare matters,” he stated.
The engagement was attended by Deputy Minority Leader and Kathiani MP Robert Mbui, Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, and Machakos County MCA Helen Ndeti.
Kalonzo concluded by pledging to work toward “a Kenya that protects its people, respects their sacrifice, and builds a future worthy of their belief,” under the slogan, Komboa Kenya.
