Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has thrown his weight behind Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, urging him to remain in the opposition amid growing speculation of a possible political deal with President William Ruto.
Sonko spoke on Thursday, July 30, at the SKM Command Center during a press address attended by key opposition figures, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
His remarks come after viral videos and reports suggested Kalonzo had made a visit to State House, sparking debate over a potential shift in allegiance.
Sonko dismissed the claims and cautioned Kalonzo against joining the government, insisting that his political strength lies in staying with the opposition.
“You can count on our overwhelming support. Tutatembea na wewe hii safari. Usijaribu kuenda huko kwengine,” Sonko declared.
The former governor said the alleged State House visit surprised many Kenyans but quickly downplayed its significance, terming the reports as propaganda.
“When we saw those videos of you in State House, we were very shocked, but I told Kenyans hizi ni story za jaba na mogoka. Our stand is that we are going to be with the people. This is your only bullet yenye imebaki,” he added.
The statement underscores rising political tension and uncertainty within opposition ranks, as leaders position themselves ahead of future elections.
Kalonzo, however, welcomed Sonko’s support and sought to calm the situation, revealing that the former governor had already reached out to him over the matter.
“We are very pleased to receive our brother Mike Sonko. I want to thank him for reaching out to me when I was in Dar es Salaam. He was equally concerned, but I reassured him that everything was fine,” Kalonzo said.
