Siaya Governor James Orengo has weighed in on the outcome of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, describing the result as a decisive signal of changing political dynamics across the country.

In a statement following the announcement of results, Orengo said the victory by Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru reflects the will of ordinary wananchi and marks a turning point in Kenya’s political landscape.

“DCP’s Sammy Douglas Waweru’s decisive win in Ol Kalou represents a triumph for ordinary citizens. It is a clear signal that the ground has shifted, and President Ruto should prepare for a single term,” Orengo stated.

Waweru secured a landslide victory after garnering 33,937 votes, translating to more than 80 per cent of the total votes cast.

His closest challenger, United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, managed 5,304 votes in a contest widely seen as a test of influence in the Mt Kenya region.

The by-election, triggered by the death of area MP David Njuguna Kiaraho, attracted national attention, with major political players backing rival candidates.

The outcome has since sparked debate on its broader implications ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Orengo linked the results to what he termed as growing dissatisfaction among voters, arguing that the Ol Kalou outcome reflects a wider national trend.

“From Mt Kenya to the Lake region, the people have spoken — it is one term,” he added, suggesting that the ruling administration could face mounting political resistance in the coming years.

However, leaders allied to the Kenya Kwanza administration have downplayed the significance of the loss, maintaining that by-elections do not necessarily reflect nationwide voting patterns.

Some have pointed to previous by-election wins by UDA in other parts of the country as evidence of continued support.
