A 36-year-old man from Fort Wayne is facing a felony arson charge following a deeply disturbing incident that has drawn national attention in the United States.

Authorities identified the suspect as Christopher Michael Peden, who was arrested in connection with a fire that broke out on May 6, 2026, at his mother’s property in Allen County.

According to investigators, Peden is alleged to have inflicted severe injuries on himself before using the severed body part to ignite a fire inside a detached garage at the residence.

Police say the fire quickly spread within the structure, causing extensive damage to the garage and affecting nearby property, including vehicles.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene after reports of a blaze and found the garage engulfed in flames.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire before it spread to the main house, preventing further destruction.

Initial reports indicate that Peden first told authorities he had been attacked by an unknown individual in downtown Fort Wayne.

However, while receiving treatment in hospital, he later admitted that the injuries were self-inflicted and that he had started the fire at the property.

Investigators recovered several items from the scene, including a gasoline container, multiple lighters, and a knife believed to have been used during the incident.

These items have been listed as key evidence supporting the arson charge.

Peden has since been charged with a Level 4 felony under Indiana law. If convicted, he faces a possible prison sentence of up to 12 years.

Court documents show that he was granted bail and released pending further legal proceedings, with hearings expected later in 2026.

Authorities have not established a clear motive behind the incident.

However, the unusual and disturbing nature of the case has raised broader concerns, with some reports pointing to possible mental health considerations, though no official findings have been released.
