The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially declared Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) as the duly elected Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou Constituency following a decisive victory in the July 16, 2026 by-election.

In a statement released after the conclusion of the exercise, Returning Officer Antony Njiraine announced that Waweru garnered 35,440 votes, overwhelmingly defeating his closest rival, United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, who secured 5,450 votes.

The results reflect a commanding lead for the DCP candidate, with other contestants trailing significantly.

Wilson Mwaniki Kigwa of Jubilee Party received 198 votes, while Stephen Wanyoike Waithaka of the National Liberal Party (NLP) managed 103 votes.

Timothy Kamau Kariuki (Party of Moderation) garnered 51 votes, Edwin Kariiri Muchiri (PNU) received 28 votes, Abdifatah Hussein Abdullahi (FPK) got 19 votes, Edward Mathenge Mwaniki (KMM) secured 16 votes, and Rachael Wangui Njoroge (PDP) closed the list with 11 votes.

According to the Commission, a total of 41,656 ballots were cast out of 73,480 registered voters, translating to a voter turnout of 57 percent.

The IEBC noted that the participation level reflected steady voter engagement in the constituency despite the off-cycle nature of the by-election.

The electoral body commended all stakeholders involved in the process, including voters, candidates, political parties, election officials, security agencies, observers, and the media, for their role in ensuring a peaceful and credible exercise.

“The Commission thanks all stakeholders for contributing to a free, fair and credible by-election,” the statement read, underscoring the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding electoral integrity.

The IEBC also urged the public to rely on verified information, cautioning against misinformation, and directed Kenyans to access official results through its online portal.

The Ol Kalou by-election outcome marks a significant political development, with Waweru’s landslide win likely to shape emerging political dynamics in Nyandarua County and beyond.
