A fresh corruption storm has erupted in Nairobi following the arrest of a county official found with tens of millions of shillings in cash at his residence, prompting sharp reactions from legal and governance experts.

City lawyer Donald Kipkorir has weighed in on the development with a blunt assessment of corruption levels within government ranks, questioning how a relatively junior officer could accumulate such vast sums of money.

“If a very minor County officer has Kshs. 250,000,000 cash in his humble Kshs. 20 million house in proletariat Syokimau, how much money is kept in the guarded homes of the senior apparatchiks in leafy suburbs?” Kipkorir posed.

His remarks come after detectives recovered over Sh65 million in cash from the home of a Nairobi County planning official during a raid linked to ongoing corruption investigations.

Authorities believe the amount could be part of a wider network of unexplained wealth involving public officials.

Kipkorir used the incident to highlight what he described as systemic graft, suggesting that corruption has persisted across successive administrations without significantly weakening the country’s economic stability.

“Kenya is a very rich country. Every succeeding government steals more than the previous but Kenya still stands,” he stated.

The lawyer also linked the alleged corruption to Nairobi’s persistent urban planning failures, pointing to the disconnect between policy and implementation on the ground.

“Don’t ever again wonder why we have Urban Planning Departments yet there is no urban planning on the ground. We build high-rise houses with no commensurate infrastructure. The infrastructure is the monies kept in homes,” he added.

His comments echo growing public frustration over unregulated developments in Nairobi, where rapid construction of residential and commercial buildings has often outpaced infrastructure such as roads, drainage systems, and public utilities.

The arrest has intensified calls for accountability within City Hall, with leaders and residents demanding lifestyle audits for senior officials.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing, with authorities expected to pursue further leads, including potential links to other officials and recovery of additional assets believed to have been acquired through illicit means.

The case is likely to remain a focal point in the broader national conversation on corruption, public accountability, and urban governance.
