Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is facing mounting legal pressure following claims that he aided the disappearance of a senior county official wanted by the court.

The case centres on County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Finance, Charles Kerich, who has reportedly gone into hiding after being sentenced to three months in jail for contempt of court.

The ruling stemmed from Nairobi County’s failure to settle a Sh106.7 million debt owed to a law firm, a liability that has now escalated into a high-stakes legal standoff.

According to court filings, Kerich allegedly evaded arrest by leaving the country under unclear circumstances, with claims emerging that he travelled to Dubai shortly after the sentencing.

Lawyers representing the petitioner argue that the governor may have facilitated or had prior knowledge of the departure, raising questions about possible obstruction of justice.

The court is now being asked to determine whether Sakaja has a case to answer over the alleged role in Kerich’s disappearance. If found culpable, the governor could face contempt charges, which carry the risk of fines or imprisonment.

The failure to honour financial obligations, they note, often exposes officials to personal liability, especially when court directives are ignored.

Efforts to trace Kerich have so far been unsuccessful, with authorities yet to confirm his exact whereabouts.

His absence has complicated the enforcement of the court’s ruling and intensified scrutiny on Nairobi County’s leadership.

The unfolding case is expected to test the boundaries of executive responsibility at the county level, as well as the judiciary’s ability to enforce compliance among senior public officials.

It also places renewed focus on governance and financial discipline within devolved units, an issue that has repeatedly drawn public concern.
