Investigations into the deadly dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls Secondary School have gained momentum, with detectives relying on CCTV footage and confessions from suspects to reconstruct the events leading to the tragedy that claimed 16 lives.

According to early findings, police have narrowed down their probe to eight key suspects following extensive interrogation of at least 30 students.

Authorities say the combination of surveillance footage and witness accounts has provided critical leads, offering a clearer timeline of how the fire broke out and spread through the dormitory.

The incident, which has shocked the nation, occurred at the school in Gilgil, Nakuru County.

Emergency responders and Red Cross volunteers were deployed to the scene, where they worked to rescue survivors and transport the injured to nearby health facilities.

Some students were treated for burns and smoke inhalation, while others remain under observation.

Investigators believe the fire may have been deliberately started, though the exact motive remains unclear.

Officials have indicated that the suspects are cooperating with authorities, and their statements are helping piece together the sequence of events on the night of the tragedy.

Meanwhile, families of the victims have been gathering at hospitals and mortuaries, anxiously awaiting identification of the bodies.

The process has been slow and emotionally taxing, with authorities conducting postmortem examinations to establish the identities and causes of death.

Education stakeholders have also raised concerns over safety standards in boarding schools, calling for stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations.

Questions are being asked about the state of dormitory infrastructure, emergency preparedness, and supervision of students.

The Ministry of Education is expected to release a comprehensive report once investigations are complete. Officials have assured the public that those found responsible will face the full force of the law.

As the country mourns the young lives lost, the tragedy has reignited debate on student safety and accountability within learning institutions.

For many Kenyans, the Utumishi fire stands as a grim reminder of the urgent need to address systemic gaps in school safety before more lives are put at risk.
