Siaya Governor James Orengo has protested the sudden withdrawal of his official security detail, raising concerns over the handling of security for senior public officials.
In a press release issued on May 20, 2026, Orengo said the withdrawal was carried out on the evening of Tuesday, May 19, without prior notice or formal communication.
He stated that both his personal security team and officers assigned to his Nairobi residence were removed without any replacement.
He described the move as “highly irregular and deeply concerning,” maintaining that security for state officers is guaranteed under the law.
“As a state officer, the provision of security is not a favor, a luxury, or a political privilege. It is a constitutional right and a statutory entitlement,” Orengo said.
The governor has written to the Inspector General of Police demanding an explanation and the immediate reinstatement of his security. In the letter, he termed the action “abrupt and unprocedural,” warning that it could affect the safety of public officials.
“I urgently request an official explanation as to the grounds upon which this security withdrawal was authorized,” he stated, adding that the situation requires urgent attention.
Orengo also called on the Ministry of Interior and National Administration to clarify the decision, saying the lack of communication raises questions about due process within the security system.
Despite the development, the governor said his administration will continue to serve residents.
“We continue to do our work with enthusiasm and patriotism,” he said.
