Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has called for the urgent recall of the National Assembly from recess following the latest increase in fuel prices, warning of the growing pressure on households and businesses.

In a statement released after the new prices took effect, Nyoro said he had written to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula requesting that Parliament reconvenes as soon as possible to consider proposed changes aimed at lowering fuel costs.

The appeal comes after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced higher pump prices for the May–June cycle.

In Nairobi, super petrol now retails at KSh214.25 per litre, diesel at KSh242.92, while kerosene remains at KSh152.78.

The increase has raised concern over the rising cost of living, with transport and food prices expected to go up.

“Following our proposal to amend various laws with the aim of reducing fuel prices, we have written to the Speaker of the National Assembly with a request to recall the House from recess at the earliest,” Nyoro said.

He is proposing an amendment to the Value Added Tax (VAT) Act to reduce VAT on fuel from 8 percent to zero.

According to him, this would make petrol, diesel and kerosene VAT-exempt, lowering prices by about KSh15.87 per litre for petrol and KSh17.99 for diesel.

Nyoro is also pushing for a reduction of the Road Maintenance Levy Fund (RMLF) by KSh7 through the revocation of the Road Maintenance Levy Fund (Imposition of Levy) Order, 2024.

He said the measures would ease pressure on consumers and help stabilise the economy.

He added that the proposed KSh5 billion subsidy for diesel does not require parliamentary approval, urging the government to implement it quickly to cushion Kenyans.

“All these proposals can reduce the price by an acceptable margin and avert damaging inflationary effects to the economy,” he said.

The increase in fuel prices is expected to have a ripple effect across the economy, especially in transport and the cost of basic goods. Analysts warn that continued rises could push inflation higher and strain household incomes further.

In his letter to Speaker Wetang’ula, Nyoro asked the House leadership to treat the matter as urgent and allow MPs to debate the proposals.

If approved, Parliament would be recalled from recess to consider the changes, setting up a debate on possible adjustments to fuel taxes and levies.
