The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a comprehensive probe into the deadly fire at Utumishi Girls Senior Secondary School in Gilgil, Nakuru County, which claimed the lives of 16 students.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday, May 28, has triggered a multi-agency response as authorities seek to establish the cause and sequence of events.

In a press statement issued on Friday, the DCI confirmed that a specialized homicide-led investigation team has taken over the case following the conclusion of rescue operations.

The fire extensively damaged the first floor of Melini Waithera Dormitory, a two-storey building that housed 135 students in 12 cubicles, while the ground floor remained largely intact.

“Following the successful conclusion of rescue operations, a dedicated investigation team led by the Director of Homicide has taken over the case,” the DCI stated.

Authorities revealed that all 16 bodies recovered from the scene have been transferred to Naivasha Sub-county Referral Hospital mortuary pending post-mortem examinations and formal identification.

Investigators are now focusing on forensic analysis, including examining burn patterns, possible ignition sources, and the integrity of electrical systems.

“Crime scene processing and documentation are ongoing as investigators work to establish the suspected point of origin of the fire and analyse all possible ignition sources,” the statement added.

Crucially, preliminary findings point to suspected arson. The DCI disclosed that eight students have been identified as persons of interest in connection with the incident.

The students have since been arrested and are currently in police custody as detectives continue to record statements and review evidence, including CCTV footage.

“Preliminary investigations have identified eight students as persons of interest in connection with the planning and execution of the suspected arson attack,” the DCI confirmed.

The emergency response involved several agencies, including the National Police Service, Kenya Defence Forces, National Youth Service, Kenya Red Cross, and Nakuru County authorities, among others.

The National Police Service extended condolences to the affected families and the school community, terming the incident a heartbreaking tragedy. It also appealed for calm and patience from the public as investigations continue.

Authorities have assured that a thorough and impartial investigation is underway, with a commitment to ensuring accountability and justice for the victims. Further updates are expected as the probe progresses.
