Kisumu experienced heightened political activity on Monday as the Linda Mwananchi faction, associated with senior ODM leaders James Orengo, Babu Owino, and Edwin Sifuna, held a high-profile rally that drew large crowds and set the stage for renewed political contestation in the region, according to a statement by The Standard.
The rally, described as a “triumphant entry,” reportedly proceeded despite attempts by unidentified groups to block access to the venue.
Supporters are said to have forced their way through barricades, with sections of the crowd dismantling obstacles as they cleared a path for the leaders’ procession into the city.
Once inside Kisumu, the rally quickly transformed into a high-energy political gathering, with speakers sharply criticising the national government.
Issues raised included governance failures, economic pressure, and dissatisfaction with service delivery.
The tone of the speeches was largely confrontational, with repeated chants directed at President William Ruto’s administration echoing through the crowd.
The gathering also reignited political rhetoric associated with opposition mobilisation, with references made to the political legacy and influence of Raila Odinga in the region.
Analysts interpret the event as a reflection of ongoing efforts to consolidate support within his traditional stronghold, amid emerging internal and national political realignments.
The rally further exposed underlying tensions in Nyanza politics, with observers pointing to what they describe as a growing contest over succession influence within the region’s leadership structure.
Figures such as Oburu Oginga were also drawn into the broader conversation as questions over future political direction continue to surface.
The Kisumu event now stands as a significant moment in the region’s political calendar, signalling intensified mobilisation ahead of the next electoral cycle.
