A heartbreaking story shared by Rehema, a former domestic worker in the Gulf, has sparked emotional reactions online after she revealed how her seven-year marriage collapsed in her absence.
Rehema said she left Kenya with one goal—to improve her family’s life. During her three years working abroad, she saved diligently, hoping to invest back home and secure a better future for her husband and children.
“While I was there, I told my husband we should build a good house. He agreed. I trusted him completely, so I sent him all my savings—about KSh 3 million—to buy land and construct our home,” she explained.
According to her, the decision was driven by the strong bond they had built over seven years of marriage.
She believed their relationship was stable and that her sacrifices abroad would benefit the entire family.
However, things took a shocking turn when she returned home after completing her contract.
“Instead of a warm welcome, I found that my husband had married another woman. She was seven months pregnant, and they were living together in the house I financed,” Rehema narrated.
The discovery left her devastated. She said the emotional pain, combined with the financial loss, pushed her to a breaking point.
“I felt so hurt. I kept thinking about how I struggled abroad, only for my money to be used this way,” she said.
Overwhelmed by anger and betrayal, Rehema made a drastic decision—she burned down the house.
“I chose to burn it because of the pain. I would rather lose the house than let them enjoy what I worked so hard for,” she added.
After the incident, she resolved to sell the plot of land to recover some of her money and return abroad to work again, leaving her husband with his new wife.
Her story has triggered widespread debate online, with many sympathizing with her situation and others raising concerns about trust in long-distance marriages.
She posed a question that continues to resonate widely: “If you were in my position, what would you have done?”
