Detectives from Kayole Police Station have arrested a police recruit over allegations of duping a member of the public Sh687,000 in a fake employment scam.
The suspect, identified as Kipkoech Isaac, allegedly promised the victim an official Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) employment letter in exchange for Sh700,000.
On November 12, 2025, the victim handed over Sh687,000, believing the recruit’s assurances. Soon after, Kipkoech reportedly went off the radar, with his phone switched off and the promised employment letter never materialising.
“The complainant was misled into parting with a substantial sum under false pretences,” detectives said in a statement.
Following the report, police launched a manhunt, tracing Kipkoech to the National Police College, Embakasi A campus. He was subsequently arrested and is currently in custody, undergoing processing ahead of his arraignment.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) condemned the act, warning the public against individuals exploiting official employment processes for personal gain.
This incident adds to a growing list of employment-related frauds in the country, where job seekers are often targeted due to desperation for secure positions in government agencies.
Authorities have reiterated that no legitimate recruitment requires upfront payments and urged victims to report suspicious offers immediately.
Kipkoech is expected to face charges of obtaining money by false pretences, and investigations are ongoing to establish if other victims were affected by similar schemes.
Police have also pledged to tighten monitoring of recruitment processes and internal oversight within the service, aiming to prevent members from exploiting their positions for personal gain.
The case serves as a cautionary tale for job seekers nationwide, highlighting the risks of unofficial recruitment channels and the need for vigilance in dealings involving government employment offers.
