Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has underscored the pivotal role of churches and religious organizations in fostering peace and cohesion in communities affected by insecurity.
Speaking on X, Murkomen emphasized that partnerships between government, faith-based groups, and local communities are key to curbing sporadic incidents of banditry in regions such as the Kerio Valley, Upper Eastern, and Northern Kenya.
“The church plays a significant role in promoting peace and cohesion between communities. Our partnership with the church and other religious organizations is therefore critical in our ongoing efforts to pacify some pockets in the country still experiencing sporadic incidents of insecurity,” Murkomen wrote.
He also commended security agencies, religious groups, and local communities for their contributions, noting that their joint efforts have led to significant progress in tackling insecurity.
On Sunday, Murkomen joined church leaders and worshippers at AIC Kapsowar Sanctuary in Elgeyo Marakwet County, supporting the church’s ongoing development initiatives.
The CS also addressed students at Moi Kapsowar Girls Secondary School, highlighting the importance of education in promoting social cohesion.
The event drew senior government officials and stakeholders, including Head of Public Service Felix Koske, Governor Wisley Rotich, Senator William Kisang, MPs Timothy Kipchumba and Caroline Ng’elechei, Central Bank Deputy Governor Dr. Susan Koech, and Kenya Airports Authority Chairman Caleb Kositany.
Murkomen’s engagement reflects the government’s continued strategy to integrate religious institutions into community development and security initiatives.
The CS reiterated that faith-based organizations remain critical allies in the ongoing fight against insecurity, urging communities to continue collaborating with both the government and religious leaders to sustain peace in Kenya’s vulnerable regions.
This initiative aligns with broader government efforts to combine security operations with community-driven peacebuilding, aiming to create lasting stability in areas historically affected by banditry.
