Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi joined African Foreign Ministers in the Ethiopian capital as the continent convened for the 48th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Executive Council.
The meeting, held at the AU Headquarters, marks a critical stage in shaping Africa’s collective policy priorities ahead of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
Chaired by Angola’s Foreign Minister, H.E. Tete António, the session sets the groundwork for the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly scheduled for February 14–15. Discussions focused on the theme: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”
Speaking at the opening, Mudavadi emphasized the strategic importance of sustainable water management and sanitation systems.
He noted that these issues are central not only to public health but also to food security, climate resilience, and long-term economic growth across Africa.
“Our shared water resources and sanitation infrastructure are critical to the continent’s future. Addressing these challenges collectively ensures that our nations can achieve the ambitions of Agenda 2063,” he said.
The Executive Council meeting will deliberate on policies that promote equitable access to water, improved sanitation services, and cross-border cooperation on resource management.
Ministers are expected to align national strategies with continental objectives, paving the way for coordinated action by African governments.
Mudavadi also highlighted Kenya’s commitment to supporting AU initiatives on water governance, citing ongoing national projects that enhance water efficiency and sanitation access in both urban and rural communities.
As African leaders prepare for the upcoming Assembly of Heads of State and Government, the Executive Council session in Addis Ababa signals a renewed focus on collaboration and sustainable development.
The outcomes are expected to guide decision-making on investments, partnerships, and policies that safeguard the continent’s water resources for current and future generations.
